St. Mark as a Lion with Two Monks

1400
Stone
Correr Museum, Venice, Italy

This is a good example of the use of a lion to represent the person of St. Mark, or perhaps in this case the city of Venice in the person of St. Mark. The lion is receiving, or more likely giving, a standard to two monks. Perhaps the standard represents a place or district?

The inscription beneath the lion's belly gives the sculptor's name (not very legible but possibly Angelus Coriano Artino) and the date MCCCC (1400).
